What Does a VP of Finance Actually Make in 2026?

A VP of Finance's real compensation almost never matches the number on the offer letter, because most companies and most candidates are still only talking about base salary. In a mid-market company, base pay typically runs $160,000 to $220,000 depending on company size and region, but that number alone is the floor, not the ceiling, and treating it as the whole answer is why so many VP of Finance searches stall at the final offer.

PRL International is a retained executive search firm serving Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, specializing in senior-level finance placements across energy, manufacturing, and mid-market companies.

What Is the Average VP of Finance Salary in 2026?

The average VP of Finance base salary in 2026 sits between $160,000 and $220,000 at most mid-market companies, with the range driven primarily by company revenue, not geography. A VP of Finance at a $40 million manufacturer and a VP of Finance at a $300 million portfolio company can carry the same title and a $60,000 gap in base pay, because the job scales with the size of the P&L they actually touch, not the label on the door. Every public salary site reports a version of this base number. None of them show what gets layered on top of it, which is the part that actually decides whether an offer is competitive.

Why Does Base Salary Alone Miss the Real VP of Finance Compensation Picture?

Base salary alone misses the real picture because total compensation at this level can run two to three times base once bonus, LTIP, and incentive structure are added in, and that spread is not random. A growing business can fund a real incentive structure because growth creates the upside to fund it with, bonus pools, equity-like vehicles, a credible path to the top of the range. A flat or declining business, even one offering the identical title and the identical base, usually cannot, no matter how the offer is worded. We have watched candidates compare two offers with nearly the same base salary and walk straight into the weaker one, because nobody had asked which kind of company was actually behind the number.

"A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight." Proverbs 11:1

That is the whole problem with quoting base salary alone. It is a false balance, accurate as far as it goes and misleading about what is actually being weighed. WorldatWork's own research on total rewards makes the same point from the employer side: companies that lead with total compensation structure in an offer close faster and lose fewer finalists late in the process than companies that lead with base alone.

RoleTypical Base RangeTypical Total Comp
Controller$120,000 to $160,000$135,000 to $310,000
VP of Finance$160,000 to $220,000$250,000 to $500,000
CFO$220,000 to $320,000+$320,000 to $800,000+

What Separates a VP of Finance From a Controller or a CFO in Pay?

A VP of Finance is paid for strategic ownership a Controller does not carry and enterprise-wide authority a CFO has that a VP of Finance does not, and the pay gap at each step reflects exactly that line. A Controller owns the close, the audit, and the accuracy of the numbers. A VP of Finance owns what the numbers mean for the next 12 to 24 months, FP&A, capital planning, and board-level reporting, without full P&L authority over the whole company. A CFO owns the P&L itself, the capital structure, and the relationship with the board or ownership group directly. Candidates evaluating a VP of Finance offer should measure it against what the role actually controls, not just the title two rungs up or two rungs down.
